Steven A. Kooperman, MD

Steven Kooperman received his BS degree in biology from the University of Illinois at Champaign, and went on to study medicine at Rush Medical College in Chicago. After receiving his MD degree in 1981, he completed his residency at the University Of Florida College Of Medicine, one of the most prestigious programs in the country at that time. Here, he held the honor of being appointed Administrative Chief Resident.

Dr. Kooperman has always strived to bring innovation and cutting edge technologies to Ob/Gyn in our area. He was the first to introduce a safer and less traumatic means of delivery, vacuum extraction, as an alternative to forceps delivery at Lutheran General Hospital and then Northwest Community Hospital, where it is now a routine procedure. He brought modern endometrial ablation to the Chicago area by participating in clinical trials and bringing the data to the television media. This helped spark the movement from hysterectomy to minimally invasive surgery to correct abnormal uterine bleeding. He has had a vital role in the development of advanced laparoscopic minimally invasive surgery at Northwest Community Hospital, which helps patients enjoy a more rapid recovery from surgery. Recently, he has helped develop the foundation for DaVinci Robotic Surgery at NWCH. The program at our practice is now headed by Dr. Dawn Sadowski and allows complicated pelvic procedures to be performed via the special capabilities of less invasive robotic surgery.

For many years, Dr. Kooperman has headed the Perinatal Loss Program teaching doctors and nurses how to approach family loss sensitively and effectively. He has also been a member and chairman of the Physician Quality Assurance Committee at NWCH. This committee focuses on helping physicians improve patient outcomes and quality of care. As past Chairman of the Ob/Gyn Department, Dr. Kooperman has contributed to the department by uniting physicians' efforts toward best practices in medicine via education and training by experts in their fields.

Dr. Kooperman was chairman and host of the annual meeting introducing innovative new technologies to the medical community at NWCH. The mantra of this meeting is to educate all doctors from all fields about all of the newest medical developments.

Adding to Dr. Kooperman's special background, he has enjoyed 30 years of happy marriage to Paula, who is currently the director of PSK4life. Her professional career in health and fitness has brought Dr. Kooperman a special understanding of the needs of our athletic/fitness-oriented patients. Being able to understand fitness training at various levels allows him to introduce this information to patients not yet involved in this aspect of their health.

Today, Dr. Kooperman's practice remains diverse with special interests in gynecology, minimally invasive surgery, operative hysteroscopy and menopause. He is also profoundly interested in the fields of longevity and preventative health.
